Every year a convoy of 100 classic and new automobiles winds around the Palos Verdes Peninsula in the Road Rallye precursor to the following day’s Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance.

The 2011 Rallye will start on Saturday, September 17 at the 147-year-old Banning Residence Museum in Wilmington and end at the Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes Estates.

The Rallye’s theme will be Gallic, in honor of French-American artist Guy Buffet, the Concours’ Grand Marshall, according to organizers Susie and Ed Beall.

“We begin at noon with a French picnic lunch and a tour of the new “Moving Forward” exhibition at the Banning Museum that gives us a fascinating look at the changing world of transportation in Southern California,” says Ms. Beall.

“At 2 p.m. the cars will set off for Palos Verdes on a route that includes three refreshment stops. Each driver will be given a wooden artist’s box with paints, brushes and instructions. When they get to the PV Golf Club there will be a reception with refreshments, and prizes will be awarded for Rallye times, a trivia contest and created art. A helicopter will also drop balls onto a target on the golf course with a cash prize for the winning golf ball,” she said.

“We are encouraging guests to dress as characters from Guy Buffet’s paintings, which can be seen on the Web at http://www.lahainagalleries.com/?ARTDET&aid=124257,”she stated.

The 2011 Grand Marshal's Dinner, which comprises three Bistros d'Elegance with French cuisine, wines and entertainment will be held at the Palos Verdes Golf Club immediately following the Rallye. Bistro attendees will be included in the Road Rallye reception.

The fee for the Road Rallye is $125 per person for a minimum of two. It includes lunch at the start and the reception at the finish. Cost for the dinner is $150 per person which begins with the reception. A combination ticket that includes both the Rallye and the dinner is $215 per person, for a minimum of two people.

The 19th annual Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance will be held at Trump National Golf Club, Rancho Palos Verdes on Sunday, September 18, and will highlight California Style and Design. The featured Marques will be the coachwork of Howard “Dutch” Darrin, the Shelby Cobra and Woodies.

“This year’s event will be a colorful tribute to the art and beauty of our cars plus the art and natural beauty of the Palos Verdes Peninsula,” said Concours Chairman Peter Kunoth.

Classes to be judged include horseless carriages, Darrin coachwork, American classics, European classics, California sports cars, American 50’s convertibles, American 50’s station wagons, Woodies, Hot Rod legends, Corvettes, Ford T-Birds, Shelby Cobras, Shelby Mustangs, muscle cars, European sports cars, Ferraris and Japanese sports cars.

In addition to viewing the more than 200 exhibited cars, visitors can see craftsmen at work in Restoration Alley, shop for gifts, dine in the elegant Trump Club House, and look at show cars in the display areas.
